Mrs. C's science class has been exploding with a whirlwind of fun science experiments in the past few weeks! Come take a look at what they have learned.

During our weather unit, the students learned about storms and tornados. They brought in empty liter bottles for the grand experiment of creating tornados in a bottle. The kids added colored water and glitter to their bottles to highlight the swirling funnel clouds.

Hooray! We have two new class movies to share with you this week. The first is called "The Mystery Stocking", a tale of drama and intrigue in which the kids try to figure out just what is in that stocking.

Well, that's all for this week. So...

Monday (Phonics & Writing): 1.) Write the following sentence: “My name is (first name) (last name).” Use fingerspaces, and make sure that only the first letter of the name is capital and all the rest are lowercase. 2.) Think of words that end with the letter “G” (i.e. pig) and make a list. Write the number of words below your list.

Tuesday (Math): Draw 3 triangles using different sizes in order to show big, bigger and biggest. Next draw 3 pencils to show long, longer, and longest. Discuss with your family how the words big and long are similar. Write one sentence to tell about these words.

Wednesday (Science/Social Studies): Draw lines to divide the paper into 4 boxes and label each with a type of weather we have: rainy, sunny, windy, or snowy. In each labeled box draw something that you might wear when the weather is like that.

Thursday (Language Arts): Turn your homework journal sideways and write the words “Happy New Year” across the top, putting extra space between each letter. Under each letter write 2 words that begin with that particular letter. Your answers may include animal words reading words, fruits, objects in your home, etc. Here is an example:

hat        ape      pizza       pig        yes         nine      eagle      why         yet        ear        able        rug

Friday(Reading): Pick a book, and before reading it, look for words you know. Then take turns reading with someone in your home (i.e. Mom reads one sentence, you read the next, etc.)

Monday (Phonics & Writing): 1.) Write your first and last names 3 times. Make sure that only the first letter is capital and all the rest are lowercase. 2.) Write 3 sentences using the words I, like, to, a and my. Use capitals, punctuation and finger spaces.

Tuesday (Math): We have been practicing numbers through 30 in math. Make paper numbers on small squares. Place them on paper plates or inside bowls. Toss a penny and see which number you land on. Write the number in your journal. Draw an easy picture to show that many objects.

Wednesday (Science/Social Studies): We have been learning about weather. Look in magazines or on the internet and find one picture of each. Cut out the pics and paste in the homework journal.

Thursday (Language Arts): Write the upper case letter P 5x's. Write the lower case letter p 5x's. Name, write and illustrate five (5) fruits that begin with the letter Pp.

Friday(Reading): Practice tying your shoes and zipping your coat over the weekend.

Pudding and Michael Jackson, our class gerbils, got an early Christmas gift this week. We have been saving up toilet paper and paper towel tubes, and this week we filled their cage with them instead of bedding. We are calling it TubeWorld, and we love watching the gerbils tunnel and explore. Please send more tubes in with your child to school for the gerbils' Christmas fun. We will be decorating some of the tubes you send with nontoxic crayons to make their little home festive and fun for the holidays.

Also, instead of homework this week, we would like the students to get started with their Winter Break Packet. All packets are due on the first school day in January.

Our Rainbow Wall is filling up with excellent behavior! So far this school year, the students have completed over 40 rainbows by showing excellent behavior in class. A permission slip came home today in your child's blue folder regarding a pizza party we are having on Friday. Please fill it out today and return it tomorrow so that we can plan our Rainbow Wall party.

Also, here is a link to the Winter Packet for Kindergarten. This is required homework for students to complete over the winter break. Please follow the link, print out the booklets, and have your child complete and return the work in January when we return. We will send reminders about the Winter Packets as the holidays get closer.

Think of some words that start with the /k/ sound and make a list. Stretch out the words so you can hear and write all the sounds. Then write 3 sentences using 3 of your words.

Tuesday (Math): Make a list of all the things around you or at home that come in pairs, such as 2 gloves or 2 hands. Next, draw these groups of 2's several times to show pairs, and write 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 next to the pictures. Can you figure out why they call this “skip counting”?

Wednesday (Science/Social Studies): Make a list of different types of weather that can be found on the earth. Draw a picture of all of them and label your pictures.

Thursday (Language Arts): 1.) Write a sentence using as many words that begin with the /k/ sound as you can (i.e. “Can cuddly cats kiss kangaroos?”)Silly sentences are fine! Be sure to use a capital at the beginning of the sentence, finger spaces between words, and end with punctuation. 2.) Illustrate your sentence using colors and details.

Friday(Reading): Pick three of your favorite books. Scan through each book to find words that you already know, then read your books aloud to a family member.
