Homework Nov. 30- Dec. 4

*BE SURE TO WRITE NAME AND DATE ON EACH PAGE OF HOMEWORK*

**ALL ARTWORK, DRAWING AND WRITING MUST BE COMPLETED INDEPENDENTLY BY THE STUDENTS.**

Monday (Phonics & Writing): 1.) In class, we have been learning how to stretch out words to listen for letter sounds. Find 3 things in a book, magazine or internet that begin with "V". Stretch out each word (i.e. “vase” would sound like vvvvaaaaassssss). Write the sounds you heard to make the word. Have a parent write the true spelling below your word. 2.) Write your first name 5 times. Make sure that only the first letter is capital and all the rest are lowercase.

Tuesday (Math): Use an object in your home to show a group of ten, such as ten cheerios. Using paper, glue them into a box with ten squares. Discuss why ten is less than 12...etc.

Wednesday (Science/Social Studies): We have been learning about families, things we do together and places we go. Now write two sentences to tell where you like to go with a friend and what you like to do. Check for finger spaces, capitals and punctuation. Draw a picture of your best friend!

Thursday (Language Arts): 1.) Make a list of _at words (like cat, that, hat, etc.) Draw little illustrations next to the words if you can. How many words can you think of?

Friday: FAMILY FUN PROJECT: Cut out pictures of food that your family eats for Thanksgiving and glue them onto a paper plate. On a strip of paper, write one sentence to describe how your family will celebrate this Thanksgiving holiday. Be sure to use finger spaces, capitals and punctuation.

*Homework Journals are due on Fridays.*

We have several new original videos posted on our site (at Fun Stuff), including two student-created stories that you are sure to love! Please watch them with your child. You may even want to send the video link to Grandma and Grandpa so they can enjoy the stories too.

After reading, "I Went Walking" by Sue Williams, we decided to take a walk ourselves around the school grounds to see what we could see. We took notes along the way, and came up with this fun story that goes by the same name.

During Science last week, Mrs. C wanted the students to learn about how they can take care of the earth through conservation and recycling. So she let Mrs. Jenkins' son Jalen do the teaching through his funny and informative video, "Save the Earth". Jalen shows the kids what to do and what not to do!

Finally, we put an unusual twist on harvest time and Halloween by creating strange and funny pumpkins. After using creative materials to make the artwork, the kids stretched their imaginations to tell a funny story about their funny pumpkins. Hmmm, what will the funny pumpkins do next?

Just a few reminders:
  • Our Thanksgiving Feast is coming on Monday, November 23. We will send home a flyer with the time and location. Please sign up to bring a dish representing your culture by this Friday.
  • Our award ceremony is tomorrow morning at 8:30. Some of our students will be receiving rewards for achievement and perfect attendance. Please come out to support our class.
  • No school next Wednesday through Friday.
Have a wonderful week everyone!

November 5, 2009

Happy November, everyone! We had so much learning fun last week with our book reports, storybook parade, and harvest party. Thanks for all of you for helping us make it a wonderful and fun day. Now, on to class news.

First off, we want to congratulate those students who turned in their reading charts for October, and they are...Romero, Alyssa, both Austins, and Jasmine. They have earned a trip to the treasure chest and an extra recess. Good job kids!!! Be sure to read to and with your child and mark the chart daily.

We have started new themes in all our subjects. In Math, we are learning ordinal numbers (like first, third, or fifth). We are learning about families in both Language Arts and Social Studies. Our new phonics technique is called "onset and rime", which is just being able to take the beginning sound off of a word (like "mmm...an...man"). We often play a game called Silly Words, where we take the beginning sound off a word, and put a different sound on. Playing with words and word sounds is a precursor for reading and spelling. Ask your child each evening about these themes and more.

The calendar for Nov/Dec has been updated. Have a look and take note of upcoming events. You will find the link to the right.

Thank you so much, parents, for providing the snacks for the students.  They are so happy to have such a variety of choices every day! Right now, our "pantry" is full, and we don't need anymore food items at this time. However, we do need plastic spoons, paper plates, and juice boxes. We will let you know when our snack supply begins to run low.

Did you read to your child today? There's no time like the present!

Homework Nov. 2-6

**NOTE: Please be available to assist your child with homework, but remember that it is their work, and they must do the drawing, coloring, writing, etc, themselves.

Pick one of the pictures and write a sentence using the following words: “I see a (color word) (name of picture).” 2.) Tuesday (Math): 1.) Draw five kids standing in line. Color the first kid red. Color the third kid blue. Color the second kid yellow. Color the fourth kid orange. Color the fifth one green. Circle the last kid in line.

Wednesday (Science/Social Studies): We are learning about modern times and long ago. Either bring in photos or draw pictures of your mother when she was a little girl, and now that she is an adult. We will compare and contrast the pictures in class.

Thursday (Language Arts): We have read the book “Goldilocks and the Bears.” Discuss and summarize your favorite part of the story (i.e. “I really liked it when….”) and draw a picture of it. Be sure to use colors and details in your drawing.
