We just want to thank the many chaperones who volunteered for the zoo trip yesterday. The weather was PERFECT for walking around the zoo, and the kids had the best time.

Our next (and final) field trip will be our Kindergarten Celebration in the Park, which will happen on Monday, June 14 from 9:30-12:30. Please come if you can! Afterwards, we will pass out certificates, say a poem, and celebrate this momentous time in your child's life. Please send a bag lunch with your child on Monday.

Our homework is done for the year (yay!!!). As the students begin their break from formal studies, please continue to provide fun learning activities every day, such as journal writing, daily read-alouds, and fun family field trips to museums. Work on math skills at the ice cream truck or the poolside vending machine. Find opportunities for your child to read and write every day so that they will be ready to begin first grade in August.

Kindergarten will be very busy for the next few weeks! Here are a few highlights. For a complete listing of activities and important dates, be sure to click on the Kindergarten Calendar link to your right.

*Last week of homework is this week. Please be sure to work with your child and let them show what they have learned.

*Field Day--this Friday, June 4th. Students have been assigned to color teams. Be sure to dress your child in their team's colors. Another reminder will come home on Thursday.

*Zoo Trip--Tuesday, June 8th. Send a lunch in a disposable bag, so your child won't have to carry a lunch box around all day.

*Celebration in the Park for Kindergarten--June 14th. We would like parents to attend. Look for an invitation to come home this week.

One final note: Angel the Traveling Bear is lost! We sent home a flyer last week about the yellow sharing backpack that goes home with the Star of the Week each Friday. One of the students took it home over a month ago, and never returned it to class. Please have a look around your home and car for it, and return it to school if you find it. These items were purchased by Mrs. Jenkins, and she would like to use them again next school year.

**FIELD TRIP ON JUNE 8TH…SEND IN PERMISSION SLIPS AND $$$ THIS WEEK!**

Monday (Phonics & Writing): MEMORIAL DAY—NO HOMEWORK

Tuesday (Math): Draw a picture showing a simple subtraction problem. Now turn the problem around and use the same numbers to create a different subtraction problem...ex.) 8-3=5, then 8-5=3

Wednesday (Science/Social Studies): We have been doing a chapter on Day and Night. We've learned many things like opposite pairs of day and night, morning and evening, full Moon and new Moon, plus many other vocabulary words like sky, cloud, and stars. Cut and paste or draw pictures to illustrate your choice of 6 of these terms. Write labels for your pictures.

Thursday (Language Arts): 1.) Write the following words: hug, bug, jug, nut, and hut. 2.) Read and write this sentence 2 times: I like to hug my bug, then Illustrate using colors and details. 3.) Write a silly sentence using the words, hug, bug, jug, hut, and nut.

Friday (Fun Stuff): Practice tying your shoes this weekend.

Monday (Phonics & Writing): 1.) Write your first and last names using correct capitalization and spelling. 2.) At the top of the page, write the words: ape, dog, seal, and snake. Below each of those words, you will make a list of rhyming words. For example, under “ape” you may write grape or tape. How many rhyming words can you think of for each? Write neatly!

Tuesday (Math): Subtraction word problem: Draw a spring picture with objects such as eggs, birds or trees to create an interesting. Then make up a subtraction story to go with your pictures (i.e. There were 5 baby birds; four flew away. How many were left?) Write a number sentence, such as 5 - 4= 1, and cross out with a crayon what is taken away (subtracted). [Parents: remind your child that when they hear "How many are left?” that means we will be subtracting and not adding!]

Wednesday (Science/Social Studies): 1.) Observe different jobs you see this week at home and in the community, and make a list the jobs. Find or draw a picture for each job on your list. 2.) Keep practicing your first & last name, address, and phone number so you could tell a policeman or firefighter.

Thursday (Language Arts): 1.)We have been reading a bird anthology, and we learned the names of many beautiful birds. Look in a book or online and find pictures of a parrot and a woodpecker. Write two sentences that compare the birds (i.e. Both birds have strong beaks.) Draw each bird.

Friday (Fun Stuff): How many animals and insects can you find while playing outside this weekend?

Monday (Phonics & Writing): 1.) Write your first and last names using correct capitalization and spelling. 2.) Make a list of everything you know about elephants (i.e. “They are big. They are grey”). Write neatly!

Tuesday (Math): Using cheerios or some other small item, glue them onto paper to make the following number sentences. Write the number sentences beside each sentence made with your item.

4 + 1 =

5 + 1 =

Wednesday (Science/Social Studies): Day and Night is our new unit. Find, observe and classify magazine pictures of the daytime sky and put them on a blue colored paper. You can write a sentence to go with your pictures.

Thursday (Language Arts): Write 5 sentences describing how to take care of a baby kitten or puppy. Draw a picture of a person walking a baby puppy and draw a picture of a person bathing a baby kitten. (you may use a computer for your drawings or trace pictures from a coloring book) Have fun!!.

Friday (Fun Stuff): While riding in the car, taking a bath, doing your hair, etc. have a parent help you practice spelling the Kindergarten sight words out loud. How many can you spell correctly?

Monday (Phonics & Writing): 1.) Write your first and last names using correct capitalization and spelling. 2.) Choose 5 sight words from the back of this page. Write sentences using all of the words. You can put more than one sight word in a sentence. Write neatly!

Tuesday (Math): Make homemade paper flash cards with the numbers 0-10 written on each one. Flip them over so you can't see the numbers. Flip over 2 cards and create a math "subtraction" number sentence in your journal. Draw a picture to represent your number sentence. Now do this again two more times to create more subtraction sentences. Remember that the biggest number should always come first! Explain to an adult why the biggest number must come first.

Wednesday (Science/Social Studies): Compare and contrast needs and wants. Name 3 things you need to live and 3 things you want.

Thursday (Language Arts): Draw a picture of your favorite animal. Write a short story about your animal use as many Kindergarten Sight Words that you know. Be creative in your drawing and use some silly sentences about your animal. Have Fun!!

Friday (Fun Stuff): While riding in the car, taking a bath, doing your hair, etc. have a parent help you practice spelling the Kindergarten sight words out loud. How many can you spell correctly?

Monday (Phonics & Writing): On the back of this sheet are Kindergarten Sight Words. 1.) Read each of the sight words on the list; 2.) Choose 10 of the words you were able to read. Ask a parent to read each of those words aloud and write the word in your journal, like a spelling test. (Parents: Do not help them spell it, but see if they can write the words independently from memory.) 3.) When finished, underline any words that you misspelled, and write each misspelled word three more times at the bottom of the page.

Tuesday (Math): Write 3 different number sentences to make ten and draw pictures to match. For example: Draw 6 apples and 4 pears, then write 6 + 4 = 10.

Wednesday (Science/Social Studies): Practice saying your address and telephone out loud. Don’t forget the zip code!

Thursday (Language Arts): In class the students will read Pig Can Get Wet. Write a short story about a pig using the following words in your story: wet, hen, get, pet, and ten. Draw a picture using colors and details.

Friday (Reading): Find a book that you can read all by yourself. Read it aloud to someone in you family this weekend.

Some important reminders and upcoming dates:

• Orders for the Kindergarten Yearbook for our class will be placed by Mrs. Jenkins tomorrow for $15.99 each. Please send in your check or cash tomorrow morning if you want to order one at the sale price. After Thursday, April 29, the price will go up to $19.99.
• The farm field trip is coming up on Tuesday, May 4. Most have turned in permission slips and money, but not all. Please send in both tomorrow if you have not already done so, and feel free to call us if you have any questions.
• The K-Team is planning two final field trips for the year that will be coming very soon. We will go to the National Zoo later in May. This is a HUGE trip...lots of fun, but lots of supervision is needed and we could use as many fingerprinted chaperones as possible. Watch for the permission slip to come home soon. Also, we will have a Celebration in the Park to congratulate our awesome students for completing their first year of school. We will be inviting all parents to walk with us to High Bridge Park and enjoy the day. Mor info coming soon.
• Pastries for Parents is coming on the morning of May 10th. You will enjoy delicious pastries, adorable singing by the kindergarteners, and special time in the classroom with your child. Please put it on your calendar...we would love to have you!

Our Kindergarten Yearbook is on sale!!!  This softback, colorful photobook will be a wonderful way for you and your child to remember this magical year of Kindergarten. Please order one by Thursday, April 29 while we have access to the Mother's Day Sale offered by Shutterfly ($15.99 per book). The yearbook will be available after the 29th, but the cost will go up slightly.Order forms went home last week, and we will send another round home this week, in case you misplaced it.

This week in language arts, we will focus on the short /e/ sound. Short /e/ can be very tricky when it comes to spelling, because it sounds very similar to the short /i/ sound. Please use this video short to help your child practice at home. You can also give them rhyming words with the /e/ to try to spell (i.e. pet, vet, met or pen, men, then) for practice.

Put the date at the top of each journal page! Parents, please work with your child, but do not do the work for you child. Let them show you what they know!

Monday (Phonics & Writing): We are learning about rhyming poems this week. Write a poem that has four lines with rhyming words. EX: “One day I saw a cat; He was fat, fat, fat; He went to see the rat; they both had a chat.” Be creative!

Tuesday (Math): Count the adults that live in your home. Next, add (+) using this symbol, the number of kids who live in your home. Write a number sentence to show your whole family. Draw a picture of your family. For example: 2 + 3 = 5 people in my family.

Wednesday (Science/Social Studies): Find a picture of a map in a magazine, book, or on the internet. Label your map (i.e. United States Map) and write one sentence about what you can see on the map.

Thursday (Language Arts): This week we will be reading about The Tortoise and The Hare. Write a short story about a turtle and a rabbit that are best friends. Use these words in your story: here, she, he, like, said, the, play, a, friend, and have. Ex. “The rabbit is my friend. She said she likes to play with me here in the back yard,” etc. Illustrate your story using colors and details. Have fun!

Friday (Social Studies): Try to memorize your home address, and practice saying it throughout the day, i.e. when you do your hair, when you take a bath, or during breakfast.

We are excited to be creating a yearbook for our class, and hope that you would consider ordering one to commemorate your child's first year in elementary school. An order form came home with your child today with more information. If you would like to purchase one, please send in your money by April 29th for the discounted price.


Also, we have just started a new unit in math on addition. Students will use manipulatives, worksheets, and their own fingers to practice adding. Please support this unit at home by encouraging your child to add up simple household items.


Finally, you may be interested in taking your child to "Maryland Day...Explore Our World" on this Saturay, April 24th at the University of Maryland at College Park. There is so much to do there, including hands-on math and science activities, exhibits, live performances and much more. To learn more, click on the link above. I will be taking my boys to Maryland Day, and I hope to see you there too!

Monday (Phonics & Writing): 1.) Write your first and last name, then write your telephone number below. 2.) Make a list of words with the short /o/ sound that rhyme with NOT.

Tuesday (Math): Make a piece of toast or sandwich at home. Cut it into 4 equal size parts. Describe in a few sentences how to share your sandwich with one person, two people, and four people. Can you share it equally with 3 people? Explain and draw pictures about your ideas.

Wednesday (Science/Social Studies): We are using action words like walk, run, roll, etc. to describe how objects can move. Write any 5 actions words you want and then list 3 objects for each action word that move that. For extra credit you may write a sentence for each object/action word. For example: fly/kite -- The kite can fly.

Thursday (Language Arts): Write 4 words for each of these sounds: _ot, _ig, and _ug.. Example :_ ot-- hot, pot lot; _ig---big, fig, pig

Friday (Reading): Find words that you don’t know in a book this weekend. Look those words up in a dictionary to find out what they mean. How many new words did you learn?

Monday (Phonics & Writing): 1.) Write your first and last names, then have an adult help you say your address (house number, street name, city, state, zip code. 2.) Write your address below your name. Practice saying your address to a family member.

Tuesday (Math): 1.) Fold a piece of paper perfectly in half. With the folded edge at the bottom, cut out a fun shape. Open the paper to see two sides that are equal (symmetry). Last, color both sides exactly the same and glue your symmetrical shape into your homework journal. 2.) Practice saying your address to a family member.

Wednesday (Science/Social Studies): Find the street sign on your street and read it. Practice saying your address to a family member.

Thursday (Language Arts): DICTATION WEEK: Read the following sentence aloud to your child. Repeat slowly. Have your child independently write what they hear you read (Don’t’ help them!!!) When finished, compare your child’s sentence with the real sentence and talk about how they did. Practice reading and writing any words your child had particular trouble with.

Friday (Family Fun Project): The K-Team kids have been reading books about the farm. Using a shoebox and creative ideas, construct an exhibit (diorama) of farm life on a farm. You could use clay, sticks, toys, magnets, magic markers, or anything else your imagination can think of. Make it *awesome*, and bring it to school when you return from Spring Break.

Tuesday (Phonics & Writing)1.) Write your first and last name using correct capital and lowercase letters and today’s date; 2.) Write a short story (2-4 sentences) about a dog, a hog, and a frog. Use the word “said” in your story. Draw an illustration using colors and details.

Wednesday (Science/Social Studies): Draw or cut out three pictures of objects that will stick to a magnet.

Thursday (Language Arts): April showers bring May flowers! Using High Frequency Words and, a, I, is, the, and to, write a story about a rainy day. In the story tell why you like or do not like a rainy day. Illustrate your story with a picture of clothing you could wear in the rain.

Friday (Science): How do you know it is Spring? While you are playing outside this weekend, look for signs of spring. On Monday, tell your teacher what you found.

This first week of Spring, we will be doing a variety of special activities to celebrate the new season! We have been learning about the winds of March, and will create items that can catch the wind. In science we will experiment more with the forces of push and pull.

Two very special events will occur on Thursday (which is the last day of school for students before Spring Break). The first is the K-Team's first-ever Spring-Fling Fruit Fair. Three of the K classes will rotate between rooms and do fun learning activites with unusual fruits. If you are available to help out with this event, please contact us as soon as you can. Also on Thursday, Mrs. C is planning a Lunch Bunch Easter Egg Hunt for those students who stayed on green behavior for the month of March.

Our class has submitted an entry to our school science fair, which will be held today. If you get a chance, stop by the school to see our information board. If you cannot make it, just have a look at this video:
