June 9, 2010

We just want to thank the many chaperones who volunteered for the zoo trip yesterday. The weather was PERFECT for walking around the zoo, and the kids had the best time.

Our next (and final) field trip will be our Kindergarten Celebration in the Park, which will happen on Monday, June 14 from 9:30-12:30. Please come if you can! Afterwards, we will pass out certificates, say a poem, and celebrate this momentous time in your child's life. Please send a bag lunch with your child on Monday.

Our homework is done for the year (yay!!!). As the students begin their break from formal studies, please continue to provide fun learning activities every day, such as journal writing, daily read-alouds, and fun family field trips to museums. Work on math skills at the ice cream truck or the poolside vending machine. Find opportunities for your child to read and write every day so that they will be ready to begin first grade in August.

Have a superb week!
Mrs. Jenkins & Mrs. Concepcion

June 1, 2010

Welcome to June everyone!

Kindergarten will be very busy for the next few weeks! Here are a few highlights. For a complete listing of activities and important dates, be sure to click on the Kindergarten Calendar link to your right.

*Last week of homework is this week. Please be sure to work with your child and let them show what they have learned.

*Field Day--this Friday, June 4th. Students have been assigned to color teams. Be sure to dress your child in their team's colors. Another reminder will come home on Thursday.

*Zoo Trip--Tuesday, June 8th. Send a lunch in a disposable bag, so your child won't have to carry a lunch box around all day.

*Celebration in the Park for Kindergarten--June 14th. We would like parents to attend. Look for an invitation to come home this week.

One final note: Angel the Traveling Bear is lost! We sent home a flyer last week about the yellow sharing backpack that goes home with the Star of the Week each Friday. One of the students took it home over a month ago, and never returned it to class. Please have a look around your home and car for it, and return it to school if you find it. These items were purchased by Mrs. Jenkins, and she would like to use them again next school year.

That's all for now! Please watch and enjoy our latest videos below of the farm field trip, and a montage of Mother's Day cards (coming soon) made just for you.

Have a great week!
Mrs. C and Mrs. J

The yearbooks have arrived!!!
We are so pleased with how beautiful these little books are, and we know you are going to love looking at them with the students. Yearbooks can still be ordered if you did not get one yet, or would like a second one. Send cash or check (made out to Karen Jenkins) for $20 to order.

Feliz Cinco de Mayo, amigos! Today we learned about the battle between Mexico and France, and how Mexicans still celebrate to this day. We learned how to do the salsa, made a traditional Mexican craft called a God's Eye, and read a story about a boy from Puerto Rico (where Ms. Ellie's family is also from). Here is a great website with the directions for the God's Eye and many more crafts and recipes for Cinco de Mayo.

The farm field trip was very fun! We saw baby goats, a rabbit, horses, ponies, and so many more animals. The kids also saw many storybook characters, like Jack and Jill and the Old Woman Who Lived in a Shoe. Mrs. Jenkins is working on a slide show so you can see the kids in action at the farm.

Until then, have a super week!

Our Kindergarten Yearbook is on sale!!!  This softback, colorful photobook will be a wonderful way for you and your child to remember this magical year of Kindergarten. Please order one by Thursday, April 29 while we have access to the Mother's Day Sale offered by Shutterfly ($15.99 per book). The yearbook will be available after the 29th, but the cost will go up slightly.Order forms went home last week, and we will send another round home this week, in case you misplaced it.

This week in language arts, we will focus on the short /e/ sound. Short /e/ can be very tricky when it comes to spelling, because it sounds very similar to the short /i/ sound. Please use this video short to help your child practice at home. You can also give them rhyming words with the /e/ to try to spell (i.e. pet, vet, met or pen, men, then) for practice.

We are taking off around the world in Social Studies this week with the topic "Environments and Habitats of the World". I have some great links and interactive powerpoints to share that you can use with your child at home to review and reinforce these concepts.

Our vocabulary words for the theme are:
biome
habitat
environment
plains
flatlands
landforms

There is an  awesome website that we looked at today that explains a variety of biomes (habitats) around the world. Go with your child to Enchanted Learning-Biomes and explore.

Also, on our Fun Stuff-Video Shorts page, I have added several interactive PowerPoint lessons for at-home review:
Habitats and Landforms
Weather Around The World

There is also one new Language Arts interactive PowerPoint up now called "Said The" which helps the students learn about our newest punctuation marks (quotation marks).

Enjoy!

April Showers Bring May Flowers!

We have so much going on in class now that the warm weather has returned. Our first poem that the kids will memorize and recite is a classic by A. A. Milne (famous creator of Winnie the Pooh). It's called "Daffodowndilly", and it uses a writing style that we have been learning called personification (making things that are not human act like humans). In class we will act out this poem, and practice writing short stories using personification. Scroll down to the end of the post to watch this video, or head over to the "video shorts" page on the Fun Stuff area of the site.

Also in language arts, we added a third vowel sound to our phonics knowledge...the short /o/ sound. We listen for the sound when it occurs at the beginning or in the middle of words. The video short below features Octavia Octopus who loves to tattle when she makes the short /o/ sound.

We introduced a new language arts website in Centers called Game Goo. There are wacky little jelly bean creatures there that offer games for reading practice. It's...strange but a lot of fun. Give it a try with your child at home!

In math lessons, we are teaching about symmetry and equal parts, which are the kindergarten versions of fractions. There are so many things commonly found in nature that are symmetrical that we often overlook them. Jump over to our Symmetry Page for fun activities to do with your child.

And now...the videos!

That's all for now, but there will be a few more updates coming later this week.

Plant a garden this week!

Spring Break packets are up at the PGCPS website for you to download and print. These work packets are not mandatory, but we will count them as extra credit for any student who completes and returns them to us on April 6th. Please make sure your child puts his/her name on the front of the packet so that they can receive credit. Follow the link above, or look to the right for a link to the packet page.

March 22, 2010

This first week of Spring, we will be doing a variety of special activities to celebrate the new season! We have been learning about the winds of March, and will create items that can catch the wind. In science we will experiment more with the forces of push and pull.

Two very special events will occur on Thursday (which is the last day of school for students before Spring Break). The first is the K-Team's first-ever Spring-Fling Fruit Fair. Three of the K classes will rotate between rooms and do fun learning activites with unusual fruits. If you are available to help out with this event, please contact us as soon as you can. Also on Thursday, Mrs. C is planning a Lunch Bunch Easter Egg Hunt for those students who stayed on green behavior for the month of March.

Our class has submitted an entry to our school science fair, which will be held today. If you get a chance, stop by the school to see our information board. If you cannot make it, just have a look at this video:

What will happen when you put Mentos candies into various liquids?

Finally, the students have been memorizing a poem a week since September. Now they would love to share with you their first original poetry pieces, in honor of snow.

As Spring comes on the scene, we wave a fond farewell to the beautiful blizzards of 2010.

As always, you can watch these videos and many more on our Fun Stuff page. Just follow the link to the right.

Enjoy the lovely weather, and
we'll see you after the break!

March 7, 2010

First off, a note from Mrs. J:

Earlier in the year, I sent home a letter telling you about the STEP podcasting course that I and several other High Bridge teachers are taking, and my assignment to create and share a podcast. Well, I have just completed the first episode of my first podcast, and it should be of great interest to you. "Demystifying Reading Instruction" is a podcast geared towards helping parents and others to teach their young child to read. At the top of this page (just above this paragraph) you will see a small player for Episode 1-Phonemic Awareness. When you can, please take a listen. I hope the show will be interesting as well as instructive. Thanks for all of your support, and stay tuned for more episodes!

We want to give props to our Hamburger reading group for doing a fantastic job last week on their play performance. They have been working on reading fluency (or using their "reading voice"). Each of the four students were given a part in the play and a short script. They were able practice independently and cooperatively for several days, and then they fluently read their parts in front of their classmates. Keep up the super reading, Hamburgers!

Our latest class movie is now out! Several weeks ago, we celebrated the 100th day of school. There were plenty of math and language arts activities centered around the number 100, and a delicious pizza party. Watch the video below to see some of the activities. The video is also up on our Video page of the site. Have a great week!

Kindergarteners celebrate the 100th day of school.

"March comes in like a lion and goes out like a lamb."

Well, we have had plenty of lion weather this year! In Circle Time, we learned this phrase and the kids tried to figure out the meaning of that phrase.

In math, we will be finishing up our introductory unit on money and time with a test tomorrow. The students brought home a practice test to review with you at home. Please continue their learning at home by helping your child count out change, sort coins, or purchase small items.

In science, our class will be preparing an invention to display at our school science fair. The students will collaborate with Mrs. C to come  up with something great! Stay tuned for more info on that.

If you have older students who attend public schools in Maryland, you know that the Maryland State Assessment (or MSA's) are coming up soon. At High Bridge, 3rd through 5th graders will be involved in testing for the next several weeks. The MSA's are hugely important tests, and classes have been gearing up for this for months. Well, when I came across this cute video, I couldn't pass up sharing it with you! This is a video of students at Forest Heights Elementary (located in our county) encouraging test-takers to do their best on MSA's. If you have older students (or know someone who does), please check out this video and pass it along. Enjoy!

Look at things in your room or house and choose a category with a parent to put 3-5 objects in it...like things that are brown, things that are hard, soft, shiny, dull, red, yellow, etc. Write the names of the objects, and draw or cut & paste a picture. If you really want to shine, number them.

Thursday (Language Arts): We are practicing dictation in class. Read the sentence below aloud to your child. Repeat it slowly. Ask him/her to write the sounds they heard to make a sentence. Remind them to use capitals at the beginning, spaces between words, and punctuation. When finished, compare your child’s sentence to the sentence on the homework sheet. Practice writing the words they missed, paying attention to the letter sounds they hear.

I see my big cat.

Friday (Phonics): Play the “How Many Sounds?” game this weekend when you are out and about. Name an object you see, say all the sounds that are in that word, then count the sounds (i.e. “Fence…/f/ …/e/…/n/… /s/…fence has four sounds!”)

*Remind your child to turn in their Homework Journal this week. They are due on Fridays.*

Have fun!

We have been working hard in math on learning basic concepts of time, as well as telling time to the hour. So to end out this unit, we created an interactive powerpoint about more or less time. The students got to view it in class, and could also use it at home for extended learning. You can download this file by clicking here.
Also, here is a great interactive clock website that we found to review time on both analog and digital clocks. Check it out with your child when you can.

Now for a blast from our Kindergarten past...our Harvest Festival and Parade from October. To watch all of our videos, video shorts, and interactive powerpoints, just follow the Fun Stuff link to the right. Enjoy!

As we begin our math money unit next week, our plan is to open a School Store in our classroom. The students will earn coins in class each day. They will make their own origami wallets to keep their coins in, and will be allowed to purchase an item from the store to keep. Here is where we could use your help! If you can, please send in small, inexpensive items for the School Store. School supplies, like small rulers, pencils, erasers , etc. are ideal. Or other dollar store items that have several items in one package for a dollar (i.e. bubbles, bracelets, socks, matchbox cars, etc.). No candy please! We would truly appreciate your help with bringing this money unit to life.

Also, we have another new video for you! In this short, Baby Iggy makes his fussy debut in our class. Watch as he teaches the short /i/ sound in his special baby way. You can also find this video at the Video Shorts section of our website.

Homework Jan. 25-29, 2010

Put the date at the top of each journal page.
Parents, please work with your child, but do not do the work for you child.
Let them show you what they know!

Monday (Phonics & Writing): NO SCHOOL

Tuesday (Math): Using a measuring teaspoon, fill it up carefully to the top with water several times to see how many teaspoons will fit into a cup. Next, do the same using a tablespoon. Trace both spoons in your journal, then write the number of times you filled each spoon below each drawing. Which spoon needed to be filled up more times in order to fill the measuring cup?

Wednesday (Science/Social Studies): Write 2 sentences about your favorite American holiday. Illustrate your sentences.

Thursday (Language Arts): Decorate a box with the letter L. Inside the box place pictures, items or words that begin with L. Draw a picture of Larry Lion holding a lamp in your journal.

Friday (Reading): Choose a book to read with a family member. First, find all the words that you know in the book. Next, have that family member read a page to you first, then you read the page to your family member.

*Remind your child to turn in their Homework Journal this week. They are due on Fridays.*

Have fun!

Mrs. C's science class has been exploding with a whirlwind of fun science experiments in the past few weeks! Come take a look at what they have learned.

During our weather unit, the students learned about storms and tornados. They brought in empty liter bottles for the grand experiment of creating tornados in a bottle. The kids added colored water and glitter to their bottles to highlight the swirling funnel clouds.

To see the video of our tornado experiment, just click on the link above or follow the fun stuff link to the right. You can also discover more information about tornados at Scholastic's website.

We also have been experimenting with solids, liquids and gases. The students were busily engaged with expanding sponges, bubble and balloon making, and sink-or-float predictions. See if you and your child can find various examples of solids, liquids, and gases at your home too. Also, here is a great link to Scholastic StudyJams video on solids, liquids and gases. Check it out!

Here is Miss Veronica once again! She will help the kids review what they know about solids, liquids and gases. The video can also be found over at the Video Shorts section of our classroom website.

Have a great week everyone!

The winter season came in with a bang to start our new year! There has also been an explosion of learning going on in our classroom. The students are beginning to sound out and write words in their story journals. We continue to work on the short "a" sound in the middle of words, and have started a more difficult task of finding the sounds at the ends of words.

The students will be bringing home their Poetry Journals to show you this week. They work hard, but also have lots of fun memorizing each new poem. Take some time this week to let your child perform the poems and teach them to the family. Please return the Poetry Journals by Friday so that we can add more .

In math, we just finished a unit on measurement using grams for weight and objects for height. Our time unit starts this week. The kids will continue to practice calendar skills, and learn to tell time to the hour. You can reinforce time concepts in many ways at home: use a stopwatch to time how fast they can do something; discuss what time you wake up or eat dinner; let your child help you set the alarm for the next day.

We learned about community helpers and community laws and rules this past week. Ask your chid what he or she wants to be when they grow up. Also search for community helpers when you are running errands around town.

Hooray! We have two new class movies to share with you this week. The first is called "The Mystery Stocking", a tale of drama and intrigue in which the kids try to figure out just what is in that stocking.

Also, be sure to check out "Rules". In this movie, the kids rap about rules and give us an inside look at rules in their homes.  You can find these movies and many more by following the Fun Stuff link to your right, or just click here.

Well, that's all for this week. So...

Bundle up and have a great day,
There may be more snow heading our way!!!

Homework Jan. 11-15

Please put the date at the top of each page!

Also, all drawings must be done by the students. We want to see what they can do.

Monday (Phonics & Writing): 1.) Write the following sentence: “My name is (first name) (last name).” Use fingerspaces, and make sure that only the first letter of the name is capital and all the rest are lowercase. 2.) Think of words that end with the letter “G” (i.e. pig) and make a list. Write the number of words below your list.

Tuesday (Math): Draw 3 triangles using different sizes in order to show big, bigger and biggest. Next draw 3 pencils to show long, longer, and longest. Discuss with your family how the words big and long are similar. Write one sentence to tell about these words.

Wednesday (Science/Social Studies): Draw lines to divide the paper into 4 boxes and label each with a type of weather we have: rainy, sunny, windy, or snowy. In each labeled box draw something that you might wear when the weather is like that.

Thursday (Language Arts): Turn your homework journal sideways and write the words “Happy New Year” across the top, putting extra space between each letter. Under each letter write 2 words that begin with that particular letter. Your answers may include animal words reading words, fruits, objects in your home, etc. Here is an example:

H           A           P           P           Y           N           E           W           Y           E           A           R

hat        ape      pizza       pig        yes         nine      eagle      why         yet        ear        able        rug

Friday(Reading): Pick a book, and before reading it, look for words you know. Then take turns reading with someone in your home (i.e. Mom reads one sentence, you read the next, etc.)
